Gender Sensitization
People's Organisation for Wider Education & Rights (POWER) NGO has been actively working to empower adolescent girls and boys across seven mandals in Chittoor and its surrounding villages. Recognizing that early education and awareness are key to building respectful, safe, and equal communities, the organization conducts comprehensive gender sensitization programs in local schools. These sessions are designed not only to inform but also to create a safe space where children can openly discuss sensitive topics without fear or judgment.
The programs cover a wide range of crucial topics. Adolescent boys and girls are educated on safe touch and personal boundaries, helping them understand the importance of consent and respect in everyday interactions. Through interactive discussions and role-playing exercises, students learn how to recognize and respond to inappropriate behavior, fostering a culture of safety and mutual respect.
In addition to safety and respect, the sessions focus on menstrual hygiene and practices. Girls are guided on maintaining proper hygiene, understanding bodily changes, and breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation. Boys, too, are educated about these changes to develop empathy and support for their female peers. This inclusive approach helps dismantle longstanding societal stigmas and promotes equality. The program further extends to discussions on menopause, helping young students understand life stages and encouraging them to respect older generations while reducing stigma associated with natural bodily processes.
The NGO emphasizes equal treatment of boys and girls in all sessions. Activities are designed to break stereotypes and challenge traditional gender roles, empowering students to view one another as equals. Through storytelling, interactive games, and community exercises, children are encouraged to practice empathy, kindness, and collaboration.
Over the past years, these programs have reached numerous schools in seven mandals of Chittoor, impacting hundreds of students in surrounding villages. Teachers and community leaders often participate, reinforcing the lessons at home and in local communities. By involving local youth, the NGO ensures that these teachings extend beyond the classroom, inspiring students to become advocates for respect, equality, and safety in their families and neighborhoods.
